About the Opportunity

North Centennial Manor is seeking a highly motivated Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join our team in Kapuskasing, ON, on a full-time basis.

In this role, you'll perform duties which provide optimum individualized resident care, under the direction of the Registered Nurse. You'll act as a liaison (team leader) between the RN and the care team, and be required to perform duties in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practice, College of Nurses of Ontario, and Long-Term Care Legislation.

Key responsibilities within this role will include:

  • Performing the responsibilities of the position in accordance with Bill 140 and all applicable employment laws and regulations associated with providing care in a Long-Term Care facility and guidelines under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act 
  • Being responsible for the safety, accurate receiving, storing, administration and discontinuing of medications and treatments provided to residents, while maintaining complete, current and accurate required documentation
  • Assisting with regular assessments of resident needs through the development, update, and evaluation of resident care plans and restorative plans (including long- and short-term goals)
  • Participating in all aspects of resident care, while continually ensuring the safety and confidentiality of residents in a manner reflective of the Home's Mission Statement and Values
  • Assisting in maintaining an environment to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of the residents
  • Assessing resident needs relative to recreational and rehabilitation programs, as appropriate, and encouraging resident participation 
  • Assisting with supervision and serving of meals, nourishments, dietary supplements and documenting associated data
  • As team leader, functioning as a liaison between all members of the care team and the Registered Nurse, while promoting and encouraging all team members to respect the individuality of each resident and their independence
  • Establishing a good rapport with residents (families and significant others), offering support as required
  • Participating in continuous education programs to ensure skills and abilities are maintained and enhanced
  • Functioning as a Health and Safety as well as wellness champion by ensuring the neatness of residents’ rooms (dressers, clothes closets), utility rooms, dining rooms, lounges, dining areas and bathrooms on a daily basis
  • Participating in and enforcing all aspects of Infection Prevention and Control by following established practices such as ensuring the labelling of personal care equipment, cleaning and disinfection of resident care equipment and restocking of infection control supplies
  • Participating in continuous quality improvement of the Home and associated care services through ongoing collection and documentation of CQI data, using supplies in a cost-efficient manner as well as product/policy guidelines, including offering suggestions to registered staff, DOC, and the Administrator regarding resource allocation
  • Assisting in the evaluation of nursing staff under their supervision
  • Protecting own health and the health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety

More About You

The successful candidate must be Registered Practical Nurse with a current certificate of competence from the College Nurses of Ontario, with preference given to those with education in gerontology or a related field. This includes all other applicable qualifications such as a medication administration certificate from a community college or equivalent, as recognized by the Ministry of Health. Previous experience in a Long-Term Care setting would be an asset. Advanced foot care, wound care, GPA, PIECES, or U First training are preferred including knowledge of the RAI-MDS process and general computer literacy. Given the remote nature of the area, a valid driver's license or reliable transportation will be essential assets for this position. 

As our ideal candidate, you need to possess the ability to demonstrate respect, courtesy, a positive attitude, responsibility and accountability in all aspects of work. You can identify and report problems to recommend changes to improve our quality of service, and act as an ambassador on issues related to the home. As a team member, you will take an active role in the harmonious functioning of the department and the facility, and effectively respond and adapt to changes in routine, while working with minimum supervision.

Above all, you’ll have strong verbal and written communication skills in ideally both English and French, to interact effectively with residents, their families, coworkers and physicians, in a courteous and clear manner.
