About the Opportunity
Currently, Homes First is looking for a dedicated Maintenance Worker to join our team in Toronto, Ontario on a full-time basis.
As our new Maintenance Worker, you will provide corrective and preventative maintenance on the Agency's buildings, maintain a safe and healthy work environment, prepare vacant units for occupancy and adhere to the mission statement and policies and procedures of Homes First Society.
More specifically your responsibilities will include:
- Performing maintenance and repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance.
- Maintaining co-operative working relationships with Shelter and Housing co-workers as well as interacting positively with the tenant population who have experienced homelessness, mental health, and addiction problems.
- Maintaining inventory and taking care of tools and equipment.
In order to qualify for this role, you will have a minimum Grade 12 education along with at least 3-5 years relevant maintenance experience. Working knowledge of building management/maintenance routines, the Ontario Fire Code and the Ontario Building Code is required, as is the ability to ensure that Occupational Health and Safety, WHMIS and other relevant standards are met. Certifications in CPR, First Aid and Crisis Prevention and Intervention are all assets.
As our ideal candidate, you'll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability work independently. You'll have an understanding of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness. Your strong organizational, time management, and administration skills will ensure your success in this role as you support a team working to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.
Please note that this role requires the ability to lift 25 kilograms, as well as having a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle throughout employment.
