Position

 

Geotechnical Engineer, Nunavut

 

Location and Reporting Structure

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, this position will be a fly in- fly out 3x3 rotation based in Nunavut, Canada. Some flexibility in the schedule may be required until first gold in Q2 2025.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Recurrent (Frequent):
    • Conduct Underground Geotechnical Mapping to ensure stability and safety of underground operations.
    • Perform Underground Inspections regularly to monitor excavation conditions and ensure compliance with safety standards.
    • Lead Underground QA/QC processes, ensuring quality control in geotechnical procedures.
    • Oversee Underground Corrosion Monitoring to prevent structural degradation and ensure long-term integrity.
    • Develop and manage the Underground Weekly and 3-Month Plans to guide operational planning.
    • Manage the Underground Expired Resin Program to ensure proper ground support is maintained.
    • Respond to Ground Control Logbook entries, addressing ground stability and support concerns.
    • Conduct Open Pit Highwall Inspections to assess slope stability and rock mass integrity.
    • Oversee WSRA and Stockpile Inspections, ensuring adherence to geotechnical and safety standards.
    • Lead Open Pit Rock Mass Characterization to inform mine design and operational strategies.
  • Projects:
    • Develop and submit the Underground 6-Month Plan as part of the WSCC application.
    • Lead the design of Larger Umwelt Open Pit and Dump Slope Design.
    • Update Llama Pit and Dump Slope Design based on the latest geotechnical data.
    • Conduct the Umwelt Underground Lower Permafrost Study, analyzing geotechnical challenges.
    • Implement a Swellex Ground Support Replacement Strategy to enhance underground stability.
    • Lead the Open Pit Digital Mapping of Exposed Benches for accurate geotechnical analysis.
    • Review Echo Drill Core for open pit development and provide recommendations.
    • Oversee the Radar Procurement and Commissioning for slope stability monitoring.
    • Lead CRF Testing and Distribution System analysis to support backfill operations.
    • Design and review Jumbo Bolting Ground Support systems, including QA/QC processes.

 

Desired Competencies and Requirements

 

  • Minimum 4 years ‘experience, preferably in a mining environment, and well versed in all aspects of geotechnical applications in either open pit or underground mining with exposure to geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, project evaluation and management;
  • Three (3) years of Geotechnical Engineering experience in metals mining, including one (1) years of experience in overseeing the work of Engineers, Engineers in Training (EIT) and engineering technologist level staff;
  • Familiarity with Deswik, Unwedge, Swedge, Slide, Dips, RS2, and RS3 considered an asset;
  • Bachelor's degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Civil, or Mine Engineering (B.Eng);

 

Compensation and Benefits

For informational purposes, the total annual earnings are $160,000.00 for 2184 scheduled hours.
