Position
Surface Driller, Nunavut
Location and Reporting Structure
Reporting to the Manager, Open Pit, this position will be a fly in- fly out 3x3 rotation based in Nunavut, Canada.
Responsibilities
- Drive and operate tracked or truck-mounted rotary drilling, air-track, or other drilling machines to bore large blast holes to specified depths at staked positions in open-pit mines;
- Safely operate Sandvik Di550 & DX800 rotary blast hole drills to meet daily blasting plan and production targets within OEM specifications;
- Operate tracked or truck-mounted drill equipped with auger or other attachment to drill holes for building foundations or pilings;
- Measure location and stake out pattern of holes to be drilled, load blast holes with explosives and detonate explosives to dislodge ore or rock;
- Ensure that blast holes are drilled accurately according to the blast design;
- Assist blast crew when required and carry out any other tasks as directed by the supervisor;
- Operate two‐way radios to maintain communication and report any mechanical issues;
- Conduct pre & post operational inspections on equipment, clean, lubricate and refill equipment; and
- Participate in safety toolbox talks and follow all site policies & procedures to ensure compliance;
Desired Competencies and Requirements
- Five (5) years’ experience operating drills in an Arctic drill/blast rock greenfield construction environment, i.e., quarries, roads, plant sites, tank & camp pads, containment ponds, frozen core dams & open pits. Two (2) years’ experience operating Di550 & DX800 equipment in a mining/blasting environment;
- High School diploma or equivalent required; and
- Heavy Equipment Operator certification and blasting ticket (or ability to get) preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
For informational purposes, the estimated annual earnings are $118,508.00 for 2184 scheduled hours (combined regular hourly rate of $43.00 and overtime rate of $64.50) in a work year.
