Library Technician, Serials and Interlibrary Loans

POSITION SUMMARY
As part of the library team, the library technician, serials and interlibrary loans position supports the information needs of physicians and surgeons of BC as well as College employees. The main responsibilities include administration and maintenance of the library’s journals collections—both print and electronic—management of a comprehensive interlibrary loan service and filling article requests from the library’s monthly newsletter, Cites & Bytes. Other duties include management of the library’s electronic “Tables of Contents” service and production of the library’s weekly telephone schedule.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Electronic journals administration
- ensure access to electronic journals, accurate display of holdings in A to Z, and functional full-text article links in PubMed, OVID and Discovery
- access/update/modify serials records using:
- EBSCO A to Z administrative module
- PubMed Linkout
- OVID LinkSolver
- troubleshoot access or linking problems that may arise (as discovered and reported by College library staff or physicians); this includes repairing links independently or through opening a work order with an appropriate service representative, including any necessary follow-up
Cites & Bytes article delivery
- fill requests for articles from the library’s monthly newsletter, Cites & Bytes, and deliver to patrons via email, mail, or fax
- create and complete “jobs” in the library’s patron database, MLS Trans, for each request
- compile monthly and annual statistics of requests per article
Interlibrary loans service
- verify, locate and acquire books and articles for BC physicians and surgeons and College staff
- lend/provide College library materials to requesting libraries
- maintain databases, records, statistics required to carry out this function
- train and advise back-up interlibrary loan staff
Serials’ collection maintenance
- receive and process current print serials; update serials’ holdings records
- claim missing issues from vendor via email and online using the EBSCONET claiming function
- set up/verify access for new and continuing electronic journals each January
- assist with annual serials’ renewals including making suggestions for additions to/deletions from the collection, taking note of and reporting significant price changes, requesting quotes for new titles, processing renewals in the EBSCONET serials’ renewal database
Electronic “tables of contents” service
- subscribe to online tables of contents as required
- edit incoming tables of contents and route to requesting library users and librarians
DECISION-MAKING
Incumbent works independently under general supervision making daily decisions regarding workflow, prioritization and procedures.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Incumbent works independently under general supervision. Utmost attention to detail is required to ensure that library patrons receive timely access to up-do-date clinical information.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required skills and qualifications include:
- library technician diploma or equivalent work experience
- knowledge, expertise, and cumulative experience in all aspects of interlibrary loans and serials management
- tolerance for technical problems and enthusiasm for independent problem solving and follow-through
- a thorough knowledge and understanding of the nature and functions of libraries, and of library services, standards and procedures
- basic HTML skills is an asset
